David Hansen
Biography
David Hansen was born in Sydney, Australia but has resided in Oslo, Norway since 2009. He studied with Andrew Dalton at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and furthered his studies with James Bowman, David Harper and Graham Pushee. He made his European debut in 2004 at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas and has since established himself as one of the world’s leading countertenors.
Recent and forthcoming engagements include a concert tour to Berlin (Philharmonie) and Madrid (Auditorio Nacional de Musica) of Hasse’s Serpentes ignei in deserto under Thibault Noally, Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel (The Witch/Sandman/Dew Fairy) at Den Norske Opera under Leo Hussein, Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (Nerone) at the Gran Teatre del Liceu under Jordi Savall and at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris, Cavalli’s Eliogabalo (Alessandro) for Opernhaus Zürich and Donizetti’s Anna Bolena (Smeaton) at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie.

Concert highlights include Handel’s Saul under Nicklaus Harnoncourt at the Musikverein, Vienna, Carmina Burana with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Sir Simon Rattle, Bach’s Johannes-Passion with Les Musiciens du Louvre under Marc Minkowski, Handel’s Solomon with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and René Jacobs, Handel’s Messiahunder Fabio Biondi, Handel’s Parnasso in festa and Vivaldi’s L’Olimpiade under Andrea Marcon at the Concertgebouw, as well as concerts under both Nathalie Stutzmann and Emmanuelle Haim.
Hansen’s debut solo recording for Sony (dhm), Rivals– Arias for Farinelli & Co., with Academia Montis Regalis and Alessandro De Marchi was released to critical acclaim. Other recordings include Bach’s Johannes-Passion with Les Musiciens du Louvre under Minkowski for Warner Classics/Erato, OneCharming Night, music of Purcell, recorded with Oslo Circles for Simax, Purcell – Music for Queen Mary with the Academy of Ancient Music and the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, under Stephen Cleobury for EMI Classics and Vivaldi’s Griselda, Cavalli’s Giasone and Hasse’s Artaserse with the Orchestra of the Antipodes under Erin Helyard, all for Pinchgut Opera Live. His most recent recording, Hasse’s Serpentes ignei in deserto with Les Accents under Noally was released in 2024 by Warner Classics/Erato.
