On November 16, 2025, Gerd Amelung will open the 40th season of the Israeli Opera with a new production of Dido and Aeneas.

The celebrations marking the opera house’s 40th anniversary will begin in Tel Aviv with a grand and breathtaking production that brings the very first opera ever performed at the Israeli Opera back to the stage. The love story of Dido and Aeneas will come to life under the spectacular direction of Stefano Poda and the musical direction of Gerd Amelung. Amelung will conduct the performances in Tel Aviv until November 22, 2025.

The world premiere recording of J. F. Agricola’s Achille in Sciro, conducted by Gerd Amelung, was released on CD in February 2025 (produced in spring 2024 at Theater Altenburg-Gera, label: Rondeau).

The highly talented conductor, who also serves as a festival director, will work in the 2025/26 season in Tel Aviv, at Theater Heidelberg, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and at Bayreuth Baroque. Gerd Amelung’s artistic focus is on secular vocal music from 1600 to 1800, performed both with “modern” orchestras and vocal ensembles as well as with period-instrument baroque orchestras. His repertoire spans from the early beginnings of opera to the works of early Mozart, Gluck, Haydn, Hasse, and Salieri.

Before Dido and Aeneas, Gerd Amelung collaborated with the Lautten Compagney and conducted a concert on October 19, 2025, in Berlin. With the program The Count of Monte Cristo, Amelung appeared at the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival in 2025. In 2027, the same program, featuring the exceptionally gifted countertenor Rémy Brès-Feuillet, will go on tour, including a performance at the International Handel Festival in Karlsruhe.

In January 2025, Gerd Amelung conducted Alcina at the Bonn Opera. Since December 2024, he has also been the artistic director of the Heinrich Schütz Music Festival 2026.
