We are very pleased to take over management for the German conductor Gerd Amelung. The highly talented conductor, who also works as a festival director, will be part of several outstanding productions and festivals in 2025.
Gerd Amelung’s work focuses on secular vocal music between 1600 and 1800, particularly with “modern” orchestras and vocal ensembles. His repertoire ranges from the early beginnings of opera to the works of early Mozart, Gluck, Haydn, Hasse, and Salieri.
The world premiere recording of J. F. Agricola’s Achille in Sciro under his direction was released on CD in February 2025 (produced in spring 2024 at Theater Altenburg-Gera, label: Rondeau).
His conducting career began with productions in Gotha and Brandenburg/Havel; in 2021/22, he conducted Monteverdi’s Ulisse at the German National Theater in Weimar. He has a long-standing collaboration with the Liebhabertheater Schloss Kochberg, Germany’s smallest opera house: after G. Scarlatti’s Amor Prigioniero (2021–23), he is currently conducting G. A. Benda’s melodrama Ariadne auf Naxos there (directed by Nils Niemann). At the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music in 2024, he substituted for Lars Ulrik Mortensen in directing the youth project youngbaroque, featuring works by J. S. Bach, M.-A. Charpentier, A. Corelli, and W. A. Mozart, and has been invited to reprise this role in summer 2025.
He is also active as a festival creator: artistic director of the GÜLDENER HERBST – Festival of Early Music Thuringia from 2016 to 2024, he stepped in as acting director of the Handel Festival in Halle (Saale) from December 2022 to May 2023. Since December 2024, he has held the directorship of the Heinrich Schütz Music Festival 2026.
In 2025, Gerd Amelung has conducting engagements at the Bonn Opera, the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival, the Liebhabertheater Schloss Kochberg, and the Festival of Early Music Innsbruck.
Gerd Amelung – A name to remember in the opera world.
