Stefan Sbonnik


The German tenor Stefan Sbonnik already performed a dozen roles including the title role in Monteverdi's Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Kalil in Christian Jost's Die arabische Nacht, Remendado in Carmen and Bill in Dove's Flight presented at the Prinzregententheater in Munich and in Ingolstadt. He notably participated in the re-creation of Baroque opera Almira by Ruggiero Fedeli in Kassel in 2013.

In concert, Stefan sings amongst other roles the tenor solos in Mendelssohn's Hymn of Praise (Bielefeld), Saint-Saëns' Christmas Oratorio (Salzburg), Britten's War Requiem (Exeter) and Handel's Messiah (Kasseler Musiktage). In 2015, Stefan receives a scholarship from the Circle Richard Wagner and sings Die schöne Müllerin by Schubert for Deutschlandradio Kultur. He also sings the role of Christ in Mozart's Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots conducted by Alessandro de Marchi in 2017, live-broadcast on Bayerischer Rundfunk Radio.

In 2017, he participates in the Mozart Academy at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence where he works with Susanna Eken and Joseph Alford. Subsequently, he sings Danilo in Lehar's Die lustige Witwe as part of the International Opera Academy in Bad Orb, before joining the Opera Studio of the Opéra National du Rhin where he sings Ser Toldo Berardengo in Francesca da Rimini by Zandonai and Brühlmann in Werther by Massenet.

During the 2018/19 season, he incarnates the rebel Xaïloum in Offenbach's Barkouf and The singer in Maria de Buenos Aires by Piazzolla in Strasbourg, a production that is recorded and broadcast by Arte and followed by a European tour, which will end in April 2022.
During the following season, Stefan is invited once more by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester to sing Uldino in Verdi's Attila. Broadcast live on Bayerischer Rundfunk Radio, this performance is also available on CD. Later, he sings the roles of Licomedes and Pheres in Schürmann's Die getreue Alceste in Schwetzingen (Germany) under the direction of Christina Pluhar.

Other recent engagements include the part of Cinea in Hasse's Cajo Fabricio with {oh!} Orkiestra Historyczna under the direction of Martyna Pastuszka (Victoria Ruina in Gliwice and Theater an der Wien), Händel's La Resurrezione at the Aachen Theater under the direction of Werner Erhardt, Bach's Christmas oratorio in Lausanne and Rossini's Petite messe solennelle in Münster.

This season, Stefan will sing Tamino in a new production of Die Zauberflöte at the Landestheater Niederbayern as well as the tenor part in Bach's Johannes-Passion to be staged at Theater Münster.

In the 2022/23 season, Stefan will make his debut as Asprando in Carlo il Calvo at La Scala in Milan in June 2023 and will also perform this role at the Dortmund Concert Hall. Other highlights of the 22/23 season are 3 roles such as Gandarte in Alessandro nell'Indie, Discepolo / Consigliero in San Giovanni Battista, and Peneo in Il Nascimento dell'Aurora at the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival 2022 and the role of Ernando in Il Venceslao at the theater an der Wien, and Federico in Stiffelio at the Theater Aachen.
Stefan maintains the concert and oratorio repertoire with Messiah (October 2022 in Melle), Scipione Affricano (October 2022 in Cologne and Wuppertal), Bach Concert (November 2022 in Aachen), Christmas Concert (December 2022 in Osnabrück), Christmas Oratorio (December 2022 in Erwitte) and Stabat Mater (March 2023 in Dillenburg).
