George Petrou

Biography

Grammy nominee and Echo Klassik winner George Petrou, is a distinguished conductor with a remarkable international career. He is currently considered as one of the world's leading Baroque and Classic specialists, however, his activities also include music of the 20th century as well as contemporary works.
He is the director of the renowned Athens based orchestra Armonia Atenea and from season 2021/22 on he will be the artistic director of the Internationale Händel-Festspiele Göttingen.
 
Additionally, he has developed a vivid interest in staging and has recently signed several successful opera and musical theater productions, including Kiss Me Kate, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Company and the Godson (o Vaftistikos), the most celebrated Greek operetta.

Forthcoming highlights include Handel's Alcina at the Herod Atticus theater in Athens, the award winning play 33 Variations by Moises Kaufman, Handel's Amadigi at the Internationale Händel-Festspiele Halle, Handel's Giulio Cesare, a co-production between the Reisopera in Holland and Göttingen.
