Sorin Coliban

Biography

Sorin Coliban was born in Bucharest. He has sung at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, at three of the Paris Opera Houses (Bastille, Garnier, Chatelet ), Bayerische Staatsoper (Munich), in Athens Megaron, San Francisco, Monte Carlo Opera, Santiago de Chile, Tel Aviv, the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, in Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Opera de Lausanne, at the Deutschen Oper am Rhein, Basel Opera, at the Wiener Festwochen and the Bregenz Festival.

In 2015 he sung at the Berlin Philharmony and at the Budapest Wagner Days. He gave his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2004 as Monterone (Rigoletto), and has since then sung among others, the Grand Inquisiteur (Don Carlos), Landgraf (Tannhäuser), Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Capulet (Roméo et Juliette), Fra Melitone (La forza del destino), Fasolt and Fafner (Das Rheingold), Colline (La Bohème), Filippo II.
From 2004 to 2009 he was a member of the ensemble at the Vienna Volksoper.

In concert he has appeared at the Concertgebouw, in Amsterdam, De Doelen In Rotterdam, Bruxelles, Anvers, Lyon and in Vienna, Dresden, Lucerne, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Among Coliban’s most significant roles are Filippo II, Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra), Ramfis (Aida), Ferrando(Il Trovatore), Don Magnifico and Alidoro (La Cenerentola), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Don Giovanni, Procida (Les vêpres siciliennes), Lord Sidney (Il viaggio a Reims), Mose (Mose by Rossini), Macbeth (Macbeth by Sciarrino), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Dutchman (The Flying Dutchman), Sarastro, Peneios (Daphne).

Sorin Coliban fulfilled one of his life dreams when he made his Bayreuth Festival debut in 2013 as Fafner in both Das Rheingold and Siegfried in the Bicentennial new Ring Production. He is the second Romanian singer to have sung in this important Festival, the first one sung there in the 19th century.

Sorin Coliban is also an experienced lieder and oratorios singer. In april 2012 he made his solo recital debut at the Vienna Musikverein with the pianist Kathleen Kelly, the repertoire included many songs in first Austrian audition and also some world first auditions. Sorin Coliban has performed under conductors including Franz Welser-Möst, Alberto Zedda, Bruno Campanella, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink, Antonio Pappano, Zubin Mehta, Mark Elder, Valery Gergiev, Seiji Ozawa, Kirill Petrenko, James Conlon. He has worked with stage directors such as Jérôme Savary, Kasper Holten, Graham Vick, David Pountney, Philippe Arlaud, Pierre Audi, Robert Carsen, Marco Arturo Marelli, Jonathan Miller, Luc Bondy, Nicolas Joel, Benoît Jaquot.

Coliban appears on DVD and CD in Complete Operas (Tosca, Arabella, King Roger, Rigoletto) and in some recitals of Arias and Lieder. The newest important, achievements were Fafner and Mahler’s 8th Symphony (Enescu Festival Bucharest), Don Giovanni (title role) and Don Pasquale in Craiova Romania and in Sweden, Verdi’s Requiem at the Musikverein in Vienna, Alidoro at the Vienna State Opera, Kontchak (Prince Igor) at the Volksoper in Vienna and Sparafucile (Rigoletto) in St. Margarethen Festival, Austria. In February 2021 he debuted at the Scala in Milan as the 1st Soldier in Salome by R. Strauss.

Future plans include, among others: in the summer 2021 Timur in Turandot at the St. Margarethen Festival, Samuel from Un ballo in maschera in a new production at the Scala in Milan in 2022 and Missa Solemnis in Hamburg and Denmark in the autumn of 2022.
