Stefan Sbonnik

Biography

Stefan Sbonnik is a versatile German tenor who is equally successful in concert, baroque repertoire and opera. In the 2021/22 season Stefan made his debut as Tamino in a new production of Die Zauberflöte at the Landestheater Niederbayern and in the tenor role in a staged production of Bach's St John Passion at the Theater Münster. Stefan will continue to sing both core roles in the future and is preparing his role debuts as Don Ottavio and Ferrando.

Stefan Sbonnik has sung a dozen roles on stage, including the title role in Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, Kalil in Christian Jost's Die arabische Nacht, Remendado in Carmen and Bill in Jonathan Dove's Flight at the Prinzregententheater in Munich and in Ingolstadt. He took on one of the leading roles in the first performance of the rediscovered baroque opera Almira by Ruggiero Fedeli in Kassel in 2013.

In concert he sang tenor solos in Mendelssohn's Lobgesang at the Oetkerhalle in Bielefeld, Saint-Saëns Christmas Oratorio in Salzburg, Britten's War Requiem in Exeter and Mozart's version of Handel's Messiah at the Kassler Musiktage, among others. In 2015 Stefan was awarded a Richard Wagner Scholarship and sang excerpts from Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin in a live broadcast on Deutschlandradio Kultur. In 2017, Stefan also performed with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester in the role of Christ in Mozart's Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots, conducted by Alessandro de Marchi and broadcast live on Bayrischer Rundfunk.

In 2017 he graduated from the Mozart Academy of the Festival in Aix-en-Provence, where he worked with Susanna Eken and Joseph Alford. He then became a member of the Opera Studio of the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg, where he took on the roles of Ser Toldo Berardengo in Francesca da Rimini by R. Zandonai and Brühlmann in Werther by Massenet. In the same year he sang Danilo in Lehar's The Merry Widow as part of the International Opera Academy Bad Orb.

During the 2018/19 season, he embodied the rebel Xaïloum in Offenbach's operetta Barkouf and the singer in Maria de Buenos Aires by Piazolla in Strasbourg - a production recorded and broadcast by Arte, with further performances noted as part of a 2022 European tour.

He then appeared again with the Munich Radio Orchestra in the role of Uldino in Verdi's Attila. Broadcast live on Bavarian Radio, this concert is now also available on CD. This was followed by an engagement in the roles of Licomedes and Pheres in Die getreue Alceste in Schwetzingen (Germany) conducted by Christina Pluhar.

Other recent engagements include the role of Cinea in Hasse's Cajo Fabricio with {oh!} Orkiestra Historyczna conducted by Martyna Pastuszka (Victoria Ruina in Gliwice and Theater an der Wien), Handel's La Resurrezione at the Aachen Theatre conducted by Werner Erhardt, Bach's Christmas Oratorio in Lausanne and Rossini's Petite messe solennelle in Münster.

In the 2022/23 season Stefan will make his debut as Asprando in Carlo il Calvo at La Scala in Milan in June 2023, and will also present himself with this role at the Konzerthaus Dortmund. Further highlights of the season 22/23 are 3 roles as Gandarte in Alessandro nell'Indie, Discepolo / Consigliero in ∫^, and Peneo in Il Nascimento dell'Aurora at the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival 2022, as well as the roles of Ernando in Il Venceslao at Theater an der Wien, and Federico in Stiffelio at Theater Aachen.

Stefan intensively cultivates the concert and oratorio repertoire with Messiah (October 2022 in Melle), Bach Concerto (November 2022 in Aachen), Christmas Oratorio (December 2022 in Erwitte), St John Passion (April 2023 in Cologne), B Minor Mass (April 2023 in Aachen), The Seasons (September 2023 in Langnau), The Creation (September 2023 in Georgsmarienhütte) and Haydn's Stabat Mater (March 2023 in Dillenburg).
